Who are you and where are you from?

I am Machiel Marx from South Africa and joined HSO International as a Microsoft AX/D365F&O Finance consultant. I hold a degree in Chartered Accountancy and an Honours in Financial Accounting from North West University – Potchefstroom campus. Outside of work I enjoy playing tennis and really enjoy travelling and discovering the world. If I were not working in finance and consulting, I think I would have enjoyed either being a pilot or architect. I enjoy spending time with my family, and they all still live in South Africa. Everyone is overly excited to visit me in the Netherlands (after Corona😊).

Why did you decide to enter the HSO Young Professionals Program?

Although my consulting role in South Africa gave me a lot of experience, the reason I joined HSO International as a Consultant was to get international exposure and experience on international projects. From the introduction to the YPP program I really liked and bought into the mission that they set to accelerate the personal and professional growth of the young potentials within HSO International and to empower young professionals to achieve more.

What were your expectations from the Young Professionals Program?

My expectation from the program as one of HSO’s Young Professionals was to get to know the other young professionals and to grow as Consultant both on a personal and professional level.

To what extend did those expectations turn into reality? Or… Did the program meet your expectations and in what way?

The YPP program gave me the exposure to a learning environment. Together with other likeminded young professionals we had training and coaching sessions from industry leading consultants within HSO. This definitely met my expectations to grow on a personal and professional level. I gained valuable exposure to D365 product knowledge and improved communication and presentation skills.

How easy or difficult is it to move to the Netherlands?

Leaving your home country is never easy, but I enjoyed the experience and would definitely do it again. My home language is Afrikaans and that really helped me in reading and understanding Dutch. There is also a large community of South Africans in the Netherlands and it is easy to find other South Africans (you can spot the K-Way jackets) that made the move from sunny South Africa. If I would summarize my first year in the Netherlands it would include, making new and good friends (both fellow South Africans and Internationals), joined a Tennis club (Dutch sport clubs are highly organized), got a few more healthy habits (riding my bicycle), appreciated good weather a lot more (it really rains a lot in the Netherlands) and had the opportunity to travel Europe a bit as well.

Any final words for potential candidates for the program?

If you are considering an international job opportunity, I would recommend HSO International and the Netherlands. HSO International made me feel welcome in a country I only visited once before and gave me opportunities to grow on a personal and professional level.

What is the HSO Young Professionals Program?

The purpose of the Young Professionals Program at HSO is to provide ambitious masters graduates a way to discover the possibilities in IT and Business consultancy while giving them a flying start of their career. On our end, we will provide you with classroom training on topics we regard highly relevant. That obviously includes application training but also training on consultancy skills, project methodologies and negotiation handling. We will start with the foundations of Business Applications but offer multiple different specializations. More importantly though, you will quickly be deployed onto customer projects to gain on-the-job experience. Don’t worry too much about that as we have built in mentoring, coaching and feedback sessions throughout the program. Finally, we will put you to the test, through globally recognized Microsoft exams, cross-team projects, and our famous business case. Click here to read all about the program.
